Nepal Government has launched project called The Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) in 1986 to achieve a balance between environmental conservation and socio-economic development, through people’s participation. ACAP operates under the guidance of the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC), formerly King Mahendra Trust for Nature Conservation (KMTNC).

Tourism is an important and fast-growing industry in the ACA, which is visited annually by more than 150,000. The land is fragile and its resources are under pressure due to human activities. NTNC-ACAP aims to explore the long-term potentials of tourism and development while minimizing its threats.

ACAP is well-known for being the first organization in the world to introduce Integrated Conservation and Development Projects (ICDP) as an important part of Protected Area (PA) management. Before this, people were seen as enemies of species and habitat conservation and PA’s were usually fenced off to keep people out and animals in. The new approach recognizes the importance of involving local people in the management of PA’s and in improving their living conditions. ACAP’s ICDP includes conservation (nature and cultural heritage), education, institutional development (local management committees), research, infrastructure( drinking water, trails, bridges, etc) and economic development (agriculture, animal husbandry, tourism).
